Kuná was founded in 2012 by Maria Fernanda Andrade and Luis Manuel Leon, combining social responsibility, cooperation with indigenous peoples, attention to biodiversity, organic farming, and quality.
Maria and Luis combine enthusiasm, passion, and a commitment to quality. In its first year of existence, Kuná won the main award at the Ecuadorian Cocoa and Chocolate Show. In 2014, they also received the award for the best export product from Ecuador.
The history of Kuná chocolate is closely linked to Asociación Wiñak, a cooperative founded by the indigenous Kichwa people of Archidona, in the Ecuadorian Amazon. The Kichwa harvest very high-quality cocoa in the Amazon jungle, which is partly located within the UNESCO Sumaco Biosphere. Additionally, for chocolate with a higher cocoa content, Kuná uses beans sourced from the Unión de Asociaciones Artesanales Eloy Alfaro of Esmeraldas.
