Cocoa farmer and chocolate maker
Latitude chocolate bars are not single-estate. They are made with cacao sourced from over 2500 certified organic farmers in Uganda. Tusiime Evarence is one of thousands of farmers who have long-lasting working relationships with Latitude Chocolate.
Tusiime Evarence lives on her 5-acre farm with her husband and three children. The cacao plantation takes almost three acres and the rest is dedicated to other produce. They grow cassava, banana and yams, as well as beans in between cocoa trees to make the most of the land. They do all the pruning, use banana leaves as compost and manure as fertilizer. They're always looking to improve their soil’s fertility and diversify crops to increase yield.
Before working with Latitude, Tusiime Evarence used to sun dry and ferment cocoa herself. Finding buyers was difficult and inconsistent, and prices fluctuated a lot. Now she sells fresh cocoa to Latitude at stable prices. They have been collaborating since 2020, which has allowed Tusiime and her family to save money and build their own house.
Latitude Founded in 2016, Latitude Craft Chocolate is a vertically integrated social enterprise producing specialty cacao and bean to bar chocolate at origin in Uganda. Latitude's journey in chocolate was born out of a deep desire to build a sustainable traceable supply chain, serving the craft chocolate market with premium Ugandan cacao while positively impacting thousands of households. Latitude's obsession with quality and sustainable development quickly gave way to their own bean to bar factory in Uganda, where the team of young Ugandan chocolate makers and chocolatiers produce a full range of chocolate products – from bars and bonbons to couvertures. By using locally sourced ingredients and inclusions, their aim is to bring the unique flavors and culture of Uganda to the world through chocolate. The award-winning cacao used in Latitude's chocolate is sourced directly from certified organic farmers in Western Uganda. Each week during harvest season, the staff pays contracted suppliers cash on delivery for fresh cacao at rural collection points that are walking distance from their farms. The cacao is then centrally box fermented and sun-dried at Latitude's nearby fermentary to ac...
