Cocoa farmer and chocolate maker

Jekjek's Farm

Theo & Philo work closely with cocoa farming families in Malabog (Davao region), specifically in Paquibato, an area of Davao that was known for armed rebellions. Cacao trees have long been present in the region but were neglected until recently.

Gawad Kalinga, a non-profit organization in the Philippines, established itself in the region to help local communities break the cycle of violence and find agricultural livelihoods. It was through Gawad Kalinga that Theo & Philo were connected with this community to support cacao cultivation in the area. In recent years, the armed conflict has subsided, and former rebels have returned to farming, which has led to an increase in cultivated land and the production of very high-quality cacao.

The Philippines was the first country in Southeast Asia to cultivate cacao trees. Philo is derived from the Greek word philos, which means love. Love for the Philippines and its many flavorful characteristics, and a love for chocolate. Philo Chua, the chocolatier behind Theo & Philo, realized he could help introduce his country's proud chocolates to the world. Since then, Philo has made it his personal mission to develop a business rooted in sourcing and crafting high-quality chocolates directly from its roots. Theo & Philo means “chocolate and love”, the same elements that go into every Theo & Philo chocolate bar. Today, Theo & Philo proudly highlights high-...
